Vice President Vance Casts Tie-Breaking Vote To Kill Venezuela War Powers Resolution in the Senate
|
Two Republicans who previously voted to advance the bill flipped after pressure from Trump
|
Vice President JD Vance had to cast a tie-breaking vote in the Senate on Wednesday night to kill a Venezuela War Powers Resolution that sought to prevent another US attack on the country without congressional authorization.
The Senate was deadlocked at 50-50 on a point of order vote to strip the War Powers Resolution of its privileged status to block a final vote. President Trump and his top officials put significant pressure on five Republicans who voted to advance the legislation last week, and two of the GOP senators — Josh Hawley (MO) and Todd Young (IN) — flipped and voted against the bill.
Republican Senators Rand Paul (KY), Lisa Murkowski (AK), and Susan Collins (ME) maintained their support for the bill and joined Democrats in voting in favor despite the pressure from the Trump administration.

The threat of a US attack appears to have subsided for the moment, but military action in the coming weeks or months is still likely.
An Iranian official said on Thursday that President Trump has informed Iran he doesn’t plan to attack the country and asked Tehran to exercise restraint.
The comment about Trump’s message was made by Reza Amiri Moghadam, Iran’s envoy to Pakistan, according to the Pakistani newspaper DAWN, as the anti-government protests in Iran appear to have largely stopped.

New Clashes Erupt Between Syrian Troops, Kurdish SDF in Eastern Aleppo
|
|
After a week of heavily fighting between the Syrian military and Kurdish SDF in Deir Hafer and the city of Aleppo, a US-brokered ceasefire was reached. Two days later, fighting has erupted yet again, once again in Deir Hafer and areas east of there.
The Syrian military attacked SDF positions in Deir Hafer directly, and army-backed groups attacks the Kurdish village of Umm al-Marra, immediately south of Deir Hafer, as well as the strategically important Tishreen Dam.

No Peace Dividends for US

"I don’t know about you, but nowadays I’m feeling far less secure, despite all these so-called 'investments' in weaponry and war."

Perhaps you’ve heard the quip that no matter who you vote for in America’s presidential derby, you get warhorse John McCain. Well, not literally John McCain, but someone much like him, someone who believes in militarism, bombing Iran, and shoveling more money to the Pentagon. That is likely to remain true even if Trump doesn’t run again in 2028.
Think back to recent history in 2021. Joe Biden finally put an end to the Afghan War that was roughly costing America $40 billion a year. Did the defense war budget decline by $40 billion? Were any “peace dividends” cashed in? Of course not. Even before Russia invaded Ukraine early in 2022, Biden had already committed to a $40 billion increase in the war budget. Gone are the days when ending wars resulted in lower war budgets in America.

A new film about Hind Rajab's murder points to a deeply sick Israeli society, driven into the darkest of places by a racist ideology that says Jewish lives count, Palestinian lives don’t
It is almost impossible to get serious criticism of the Israeli state, which (falsely) claims to represent the Jewish people, anywhere near mainstream US culture, even when it takes the form of a critically acclaimed movie, backed by Brad Pitt and Joaquin Phoenix, that received a record 23-minute standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival.
For decades, pro-Israel lobby groups have dedicated their efforts to telling us that antisemitism is rampant across the West and takes the form of opposition of Israel – a message endlessly amplified by the western media.

The Ukraine Snare Still Beckons
|
|
A potentially deadly snare lies in wait for the United States. U.S. leaders must avoid it at all costs. Throughout the years of the Ukraine crisis, most attention has focused on Kyiv’s desire for formal membership in NATO and Russia’s repeated refusal to tolerate that option.
However, the substantive issue has never been merely the prospect of Ukraine’s formal membership in NATO. Instead, the real threat to Russia’s security, from Moscow’s viewpoint, has been NATO’s attempt to turn Ukraine into a significant military asset for the Alliance.
